Review

ABUS offers the Pedelec helmet with e-bike commuters in mind, hence the name, but it is just as good for riders who like to go under their own power. I tested the Pedelec for my errand running and commuting and think it's a practical urban / city / commuter helmet.

ABUS Pedelec Helmet - Integrated rear LED light

The first standout feature is the integrated raincap that is neatly housed in the rear compartment of the helmet. I admit to not to needing it, both because there's not usually much rain in SoCal and I prefer to skip rain rides anyway, but if you're a regular commuter who deals with the weather as it comes, the rain cover is there when you need it. I did test pulling it out and on, then putting it back again. The rear hatch was a little hard to open initially, but after a few cycles, it was easier. Slipping the cover on and securing it to two point at the front, or taking it off was no fuss. The rain cover is shaped to cover the front vents almost entirely and leaves more of the rear vents open, making for good rain protection while not entirely restricting airflow. The rain cap has reflector spots along the front sides for safety visibility and is shaped at the back so it doesn't cover the rear light (see next item).

The second standout feature is the integrated rear LED light. Push on it to turn it on in solid or flashing/blinky mode. Having it there in the helmet means you don't have to go searching for your light (did you leave it somewhere to charge?), and it sits high and gives you a better chance to be seen. The light is powered by a replaceable coin/watch style battery.

Fit was good and as snug as I cared to make it with the Zoom Evo Adult rear wheel adjustment system. The Fidlock magnetic buckle is a nice feature and easy to open and close, especially if you're wearing gloves.

ABUS Pedelec Helmet - Visor, reflectors, bug netting

I like the look - it's one of the more attractive "commuter" helmets around - a nice blend of utility (including deep temple and neck protection) and aggressiveness, not a bowl and not boorish. The visor is short and not adjustable, but is removable if visors aren't your thing; I left it on. The front vents have netting to keep bugs out. There are 10 colors to choose from and all have side reflector accents; I tried and liked it in 'Night Blue.'

The ABUS Pedelec helmet is well built - no surprise, ABUS does make quality stuff. I avoid testing the crashworthiness of helmets, but the "double shell in-mold" design feels sturdy, and the 9 front/top vents and 4 rear are a nice balance of airflow to protection. The Pedelec is durable and travels well and is a good weight for its function and practicality.

Details

The 2018 Abus Pedelec is a helmet for the city rider, its low-key color schemes complementary to business attire and casual clothing. Lightweight and well-ventilated, the Pedelec offers excellent coverage, extending down temples and neck. Reflective patches increase visibility for twilight commuters; a foamed-in fly net blocks nefarious insects from invasion. Offered in two sizes with the Zoom adjustment system, it fits comfortably and securely.
A very good helmet for the commuter, with or without its namesake's assist.
