"Bike Lanes" - Viral video of the week

It is a fact that governments and councils are gradually becoming more aware, and indeed are doing more to create cities that are conducive to safe bike commuting and general urban cycling. It is also true that it is very much still a work in progress.

Bike paths that begin and end in no-man's-land without any perceivable purpose apart from ticking a box on a bureaucratic planning document and a general lack of awareness about how to use them are just two issues facing their widespread take up. Another requirement for efficient and safe functioning is the consideration and respect from non-cyclists regarding the importance of a designated lane for city bike riders.

This tongue-in-cheek video outlines a situation where the policeman is unclear about the use of the bike lane (or does he just have a chip on his shoulder regarding cyclists?). This is indeed the irony of the whole situation, without which we wouldn't have such an enjoyable video to watch!

What transpires is a situation familiar to many cyclists. "Why doesn't he fine the people blocking the bike lane?" It's a good question and one which leaves me eager for the inevitable moment when cyclists rule the world and all other road users will bow down to us.
